In xp and vista the "home" versions lacked the ability to be taken over remote buy other windows clients running remote desktop - the remote desktop "server service" was somehow removed/disabled..

Is the same bollocks true in Win 7 home premium ?

And if so - would you need a proffesional or an Ultimate version to host remote desktop ?

Yeah - im the last one to run Windows 7 - get over it ! Very Happy

Microsoft considers Remote Desktop hosting to be a more business-oriented feature, and as such only Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions can be used to host Remote Desktop sessions. Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate can also host Remote Desktop Connections. Anyone using a Home or Home Premium variant of Windows will need to resort to using the aforementioned VNC software to connect to computers remotely

Yeah .. I wasn't really looking for "any" remote tool, I was looking for THE best remote tool which i actually think is Windows own remote desktop.

But as this is not an option on Win7 home professional - What is next best then ?

I would say VNC or Real VNC. I have used all sorts of remote set ups but this worked as well and in someways better than Windows.

You can still invite someone else to assist you in Home, even XP.

Anyway - Ultra VNC is free - but that's about all the positive i have to say about that application..

Perhaps there is a way to tune the speed so it wasn't so choppy and laggy to work with, but imo remote desktop from M$ is far superior, details as working in your native resolution on the client you connect with without "scaling" and responsetime are two things im really gonna miss.

also the simplicity of it allows you to work with the remote machine without thinking of it as beeing remote at all.

i hate the fact that M$ thinks of this tool as a feature us private mortals are not worthy. Atleast in XP you could cheat your way into having remote desktop fully functional on a home edition by changing a registry key to let the OS think it was a professional edition, simple and effective..

The invite thing dosn't work for me as im not gonna run into another room in the house and turn on the tv and logging on each time i need to connect to my fancy little pc in there.

Damn you Bill G and all your restrictioned crap on a monopolized faulty Bloatware of an OS ! Evil or Very Mad

If you are getting choppiness/speed issues, try 'TightVNC', specifically designed to run over lower bandwidth connections, with clever compression algorithms -I use it pretty often TBH for customer support.

I will try that - but its on a gigabit lan - so i don't think bandwith speed is the issue Sad

Tone down the compression algorithm then, you're probably loading the CPU up unnecessarily.

Try uncompressed and see what happens Smile
